Is Facebook really a small business SEO tool?

In the SEO industry, we tend to get excited about new toys. While the social media networks around the net are no longer new, the possibilities they represent are still being explored. As a consequence, the average search engine optimization expert will enthusiastically recommend a social campaign to almost all of their clients. The question regional site owners need to ask is whether it’s worth it.

Facebook is a good example of the potential benefits and drawbacks of social media. While many businesses have used Facebook pages to great effect, many more have invested valuable time with little or no return. This is because the success of a Facebook campaign rests on your ability to gain attention.

So, is Facebook a good organic SEO tool for small businesses? The answer is, ‘yes and no.’ Facebook campaigns can produce great results, but it takes hard work. It’s worth researching before plunging in.There are some things to note if you are using a Facebook campaign to boost the SEO of your small business site:

*Use existing contacts. It’s impossible to start a following on a Facebook page without a few ‘seed’ followers. Make use of your existing contacts to get your campaign off to a good start.

*Look to your SEO. Your search engine optimization agency will tell you that the nofollowed links on Facebook are useless for your optimisation. There are ways around this, though, using RSS feeds. Talk to us at SEO Consult about this.

*Keep up the hard work. Unless you’re able to get your Facebook page a really good following, it really isn’t going to do much for your website optimisation. Getting into people’s news feeds will constantly put you before the eyes of potential followers, but to do this you need to come up with some good material.
