Dow Jones Up To 51,176.96 Yields Pull Lower Despite Jobs Miss For Nike Slide

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 250.40 points Friday 2 October 2026 after a much lower US jobs report calmed fears of another interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve but a slide in Nike kept the blue-chip average behind the tech-heavy Nasdaq and with a weekly loss.

What Was the Closing Value of the Dow Jones on October 2, 2026?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 250.40 points, or 0.49%, at 51,176.96 on Friday 2 October 2026, from Thursday’s close of 50,926.56. The average opened at 51,241.18, and touched an intraday high of 51,382.88 during the first half hour of trading, then retraced most of that gain to temporarily dip to 50,950.61 before rallying into the afternoon.

Friday’s rise was based on Thursday’s rebound, when the Dow recovered from its lowest intraday level since mid-June to close marginally higher. However, the average was down 1.26 percent for the week, according to dpa-AFX, and is still some 6.5 percent behind its 52-week high of 54,744.33, making it the laggard of the three major US benchmarks.

Why did the Dow Jones go up today?

The US economy added only 29,000 non-farm jobs in September, much short of the 85,000 to 90,000 economists had projected, and the jobless rate increased to 4.2%. Previous months were also revised down, with August dropped to 133,000 from 162,000, Alliance News reported. The good figure in August now looks like an aberration, Landesbank Baden-Württemberg analyst Dirk Chlench told dpa-AFX.

The kinder data soon changed the outlook for rates. CME FedWatch pricing climbed to about an 80% probability the Federal Reserve will keep rates on hold at the end of October, up from 36% a week ago, Alliance News reported. Markets had “dodged a bullet”, said Ronald Temple of Lazard Asset Management, but warned that two more months of inflation data before December may still see the Fed tighten again.

Why the Dow Underperformed the Nasdaq

The Dow is price-weighted and has a greater emphasis on industrials, consumer brands and financials than the Nasdaq, so it benefited less from the technology rise that drove Friday. The largest drag was Nike, which lost 3.6% and landed at the bottom of the average after the sportswear giant reported fiscal first-quarter revenue of $11.21 billion, below projections, guided to a high-single-digit revenue decline for fiscal 2027 and announced job cutbacks. UBS analyst Jay Sole warned that earnings projections could be lowered further, dpa-AFX reported.

And then there was the swing in treasury yields. The 10-year yield fell to around 5.18% from a high of over 5.34% Thursday following the data, but bonds gave up their gains later in the day, capping the upside for rate-sensitive blue chips.

    Oil and Geopolitics Impact Session

In response to pressure from the Trump administration to bring down record diesel prices, the G7 and partner countries agreed to release up to 100 million barrels of emergency crude and diesel over four months, overseen by the International Energy Agency. Brent dipped below $100 a barrel on the news but then climbed back to about $102-$103, keeping energy prices high as the Middle East crisis enters its eighth month. Reports that Washington is sending additional naval assets to the Persian Gulf kept the geopolitical concern in focus.

How Nike’s results rippled across the markets?

Nike’s fiscal first-quarter announcement after Thursday’s closure set the tone for consumer stocks. Revenue missed consensus at $11.21 billion, down 4% year-over-year, while earnings per share fell to $0.48 from $0.49, even as gross margin improved 60 basis points to 42.8%. A cost-cutting effort will see fewer roles across the company, chief executive Elliott Hill informed staff in a message, Yahoo Finance reported.

The dissatisfaction went beyond Wall Street. Adidas and Puma were both down more than 1 percent in morning trading in Frankfurt, Reuters reported, as investors questioned the resilience of global sportswear demand amid high energy prices and tariff concerns. Nike’s 3.6% drop helped offset some of the gains in technology and financials for the Dow, which is why the average added less than half as much as the Nasdaq in percentage terms.

Which Dow Technical Levels Are Important?

The 51,000 level has turned into a near-term support after Thursday’s drop to the lowest intraday level since mid-June and Friday’s session low of 50,950.61. Resistance is seen at Friday’s high of 51,382.88 and then at 52,000. The Dow sits at 6.5% below its 52-week high of 54,744.33 and around 13.6% above its 52-week low of 45,057.28, placing it in the middle of its yearly range after a September driven by rising yields and oil.

    Global Markets at a Glance.

The S&P 500 added 0.73% to 7,722.72 and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 1.19% to 27,190.86 after reaching a record intraday high. In Europe, the DAX 40 was up 1.17% and the FTSE 100 up 0.32%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dropped 2.6% and Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 1.08%.

Investor Takeaway: What’s Next For Dow Jones?

The Dow’s comeback is positive, but the index still needs lower rates and more stable oil prices to get back to the 52,000 to 53,000 region it was at earlier in September. The next tests are the Fed’s Oct. 27-28 meeting, September inflation data and the beginning of third-quarter profits from the big banks that carry a lot of weight in the average. Until then, Nike and other consumer names subject to tariffs and lower spending are expected to continue under scrutiny.
