Stage Lighting: Things to Remember When Organising a Play

When organising a play or other event at a school or club, there are certain things you need to make sure that you don’t forget. Once you’ve done the obvious things like choosing the actors and actresses, deciding which play to perform and sorting out the costumes, you need to make sure that everything else is all in place for the big night. One of the best things to do is to make a list of everything you need to do, even if it seems very small. That way, you won’t forget anything small and realise when it’s too late to change it.

    Refreshments

If you’re trying to attract an audience and get more people in to watch the play, a good way to entice people is by offering some food and drinks. You don’t have to get lots of different foods, but serving tea, coffee and biscuits always helps. You could even get parents and other people to bring biscuits and cakes along to share with everyone – by doing that, you won’t have to worry too much about buying lots of biscuits and it enables everyone to help in their own way.

    Lighting

The stage lighting is very important, especially if it’s being acted out at night time and you need to switch on the lights in order for the stage to be visible. The best thing to do is to put somebody in charge of the lights, and then it’s one less things for you to worry about. Depending on the venue, there might be very good lights, so make the most of it. Also ensure you have a rehearsal beforehand which includes the lighting, as then everybody will know exactly what to do.

    Rehearsals

Never underestimate how many rehearsals you’ll need – it’s always better to have more rehearsals and get everything spot on instead of having too few and then enduring the embarrassment of something going wrong. Make sure you have rehearsals early on so everybody can get used to it, and then some dress rehearsals later on.
