    Infrared Cameras

Infrared cameras, also known as thermographic cameras, are a type of imaging device which forms an image using infrared radiation. It allows users to see images when there is no or very little visible light. This article takes a look at the history, types and uses of infrared cameras, plus it explains where you can purchase them from.

    History

The first ever infrared camera was invented by the Hungarian physicist, Kalman Tihanyi. He originally created the camera for anti aircraft defense purposes in Britain. The US military then developed conventional thermographic cameras in 1947. The first prototype took an hour to develop a new photo! Since then the technology has advanced and there are a huge selection of infrared cameras to choose from.

    Types

There are two main types of infrared cameras: cooled infrared cameras and uncooled detector cameras.

Cooled infrared cameras are encased in a vacuum box or a dewar and they are cryogenically cooled. These types of cameras can be very expensive to run, plus it takes a whole to set up the camera before you can use it. Some material used to make and run these camera include antimonide, arsenide, lead sulfide and lead selenide.

Uncooled detectors use a sensor which operates at room temperature. They will use sensors which detect the change in resistance, voltage or current when the infrared radiation levels change. These types of camera are less costly and easier to maintain and run, however they can not produce images that are in the same resolution and image quality as many of the cooled infrared cameras.

    Uses

Infrared cameras have a range of uses across a whole host of different industries. Some of the most common sectors they are used in include in building inspection, medicine, archeology, technical surveillance, firefighting operations, chemical imaging, non destructive testing, pollution detection and law enforcement.

    Where to Buy Infrared Cameras

If you are looking to buy any type of infrared camera then the best place to buy them is from a specialist retailer. They will stock the largest selection of products, plus they will have helpful staff who will be on hand to help you to make the right choice. Good luck!
