CCTV NI helps police bring criminals to justice

CCTV (closed-circuit television) is a system in which video cameras are used to transmit a video image (and sometimes audio) to a specific place, on a limited number of predetermined monitors. Historically CCTV monitors had to be physically watched because of an absence of recording technology; however since CCTV systems were first installed around 1950 recording technology has improved vastly. Modern CCTV systems now record high quality, compressed, images to hard disk drives.

Where is CCTV NI used and what are the benefits?

CCTV NI systems are mostly used as a method of surveillance in areas and facilities such as banks, airports, train stations, car parks, town centres and in retail outlets. CCTV is also commonly used in industrial applications and can be useful in observing and monitoring areas which may be dangerous for personnel, for example in areas of a nuclear energy facility. Modern CCTV NI systems can be set up for continuous recording onto DVRs (digital video recorders) and these systems can record data for, in some cases, years at a time. In addition, the systems can be configured with motion sensors preventing unnecessary recording.

In areas introduced with CCTV NI systems, for example in car parks and retail outlets, statistics show an average decrease of 51% in crime compared to crime before the installation. In addition to the prevention of crime, CCTV comes into its own in the event a crime is committed. NI police now routinely seek CCTV footage from business owners, or local authorities, following reports of crime in an area. Many insurers will offer significant discounts to businesses utilising a CCTV system.
