    Learning to Skate

There are many ways to learn to skate. You can look for someone to instruct you, be that friend or a professional skater. You can look at online tutorials, both video based and written. Or you can take the approach that many take when wanting to learn how to skate – the ‘hope for the best’ approach.

However, whilst heading to a skate store and picking up some new inline skates could seem like all you need to do, it can help to do a little more preparation. Firstly, ensure you chat to those in the skate store to see which skates are best for beginners as well as which pads are likely to be needed. An online skate shop will be best in terms of price and choice of skates. They will have far more resources and be able to answer any questions you have about learning far more easily and accurately too.

It is important to get skates and pads that fit you well and skates that are appropriate for your level as a beginner. Then, once you have found the right skates from the right skate shop, it is important to make sure you know the common mistakes many people make when learning to skate.

Avoid hills when you are starting off – yes it is a lot more fun, but stopping will not be your strong point at the start, and a high-speed accident is going to be a lot more painful than one on flat ground. In fact, the first thing you should practice is your stopping so once you have got even the slightest bit of movement, your next thought should be learning how to stop that motion.

Just make sure you have the right equipment and that you take it slow, sticking to areas away from traffic and avoiding those hills until you know you can stop.
