Traffic cones, also known as highway cones, are a type of safety marker which is designed to direct traffic. They are commonly used to close off lanes and to divert traffic on a temporary basis. This article takes a look into traffic cones, and it also explains where you can purchase them from.

    History

The first ever traffic cone was invented in 1914 by Charles P.Rudabaker. It wasn’t until 1958 when the first traffic cones were used in the United Kingdom. Original traffic cones were made out of wood, and then out of concrete, but they were later replaced by the plastic orange traffic cones that we see today.

    Usage

The main purpose of traffic cones is to safely divert traffic. They provide an advance warning sign for lane closures, accidents, roadworks and other road problems.

Cones can also be used indoors to mark off areas from members of the public. This can include in supermarkets when something gets spilled, or in areas where cleaning is in progress. Cones can also be used in sports games to mark the edges of the pitch.

    Types

Cones will typically be fluorescent in colour and have a reflective stripe so that drivers can clearly see them in the night. Some traffic cones will have a light built into them, or they will be used with larger flashing signs to alert drivers. They are typically made out of thermoplastic, rubber or PVC. Traffic cones are available in a huge range of shapes and sizes. Where larger warning markers are needed traffic barrels, traffic bollards or road barriers can be used.

    Theft

Because traffic cones are small and easily portable there is a problem of theft. Replacement cones are often required to deal with this problem.

    Purchasing Traffic Cones

Traffic cones can be purchased from specialist online retailers. Their websites will list all of the products that they have for sale, as well as details on how to place an order. Many retailers will offer a bulk discount on traffic cones, so the more you buy the cheaper the individual price will be.
