The importance of a dry riser in multi-storey buildings

A dry riser is an essential piece of fire protection equipment and any building that is over 18 meters high much invest in a dry riser as per fire safety regulations in the workplace. Due to the nature of high rise buildings people inside are at more risk when a fire breaks out, especially people on the higher levels. The purpose of a dry riser is to provide a water supply to all upper levels of a building so fire hoses can be attached to these for effective fire control when the fire brigade arrive. The most common place where a dry riser will be fitted is in the internal staircase area of building as this will be the safe fire exit route in the event of an emergency. Once in place a dry riser can deliver large volumes of water quickly and efficiently to all upper levels of building to help prevent severe damage and to save lives.

There are companies who are experts in dry riser systems and they will not only design and install dry risers for their customers they will also offer dry riser testing and other fire safety products and fire safety training packages. Dry riser testing is essential once a dry riser has been installed and dry riser testing will need to be carried out at regular intervals. The British Standard Code of Practice BS9990:2006 requires a full annual pressure test and six monthly visual checks for dry risers for buildings above 18 meters and below 60 meters. There is no point in companies investing in a dry rider and then avoiding paying for dry riser testing as it is this system that will help to save lives if a fire does ever break out.

Dry riser systems need to be located where they are at the least possible risk of vanadium or being tampered with to make sure the systems is always ready for action if it is required. When dry riser testing is required it will need to be carried out by fully trained fire safety engineers who specialise in dry riser testing. They will have all the equipment needed such as pumping and testing gear to cater for all types of dry riser testing.
