Process And Coating Of Paint
Coating a paint on automobile is not that easy as it seem. There are lot of coatings applied to give effect to smooth finish. High water jets spray are directed to the body. There is proper pretreatment of paint. The Phosphate coat protects the body against the corrosion effects. The first coat applied is called the primer. The primer acts as the protector and leveler and makes the base coat easier to apply to the element to which it is applied. The primers protects from corrosion, heat differences and bumps. It also makes easy for the paints to stick to the surface and hence more varied range of paints can be used. The second process is called the base coat. It is applied after the primer coat. It provides for the aesthetics and weather protection in automotive. There are three kinds of base coats which are used in automotive applications. They are solid Paint, metallic paints and pearlescent paints. They all cater in different ranges and gives different effects as per the needs of the client.
- Solid paints have no sparkle to it. They are just plain colors and the easiest type to apply. For example the colors we see on heavy vehicles such as truck or bus.
- Metallic paints gives sparky and grainy effects. Metallic seems shiny. It is harder to manage this paint due to extra dimensions that go in it.
- Pearlescent paints contains special pigments known as pearls. Pearl pigments add a sparkle to the finish which gives depth to the color. Metallic & Pearlescent Paint must be applied evenly for a consistent look finish without light and dark spots which are known as mottling.
The third process is known as clear coat which is also known as top coat. As the name says it is usually sprayed on the top. It gives glossy effect. It is transparent and glossy which forms the interface with the environment. Clear coat must be durable enough so that it can resist the abrasion and should be chemically stable to take the UV lights. Clear coat are of two types either waterborne or solvent.
